Common use

Nootropil (piracetam) is used with other medications to treat myoclonus. Myoclonus is a nervous system condition in which the muscles jerk or twitch suddenly and involuntarily.
Piracetam is the active ingredient in each Nootropil tablet. Piracetam exerts its action on the brain and nervous system and is believed to prevent oxygen shortage.

Dosage and direction

Take Nootropil as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Recommended starting dose:
Patients generally start out by taking 9 tablets (7,200 mg) daily: 3 tablets in the morning, 3 tablets at noon, and 3 tablets in the evening. The tablets should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water.

Precautions

Before you begin treatment with Nootropil, be sure to discuss the following with your doctor:
All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, your allergies, your medical history and current health problems, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You may experience drowsiness and shakiness with Nootropil treatment; therefore, you should avoid activities that require concentration, such as driving and operating machinery, until you know how the medication affects you.
Nootropil tablets contain sodium; patients on a controlled sodium diet should consult their doctor before taking Nootropil.

Contraindications

Avoid the use of Nootropil if you have any of the following:
An allergy to piracetam or to any of the other ingredients contained in Nootropil, Serious kidney problems, Huntington's Disease, A brain hemorrhage or history of a brain hemorrhage.

Possible side effect

Spontaneous bleeding, mood changes, hallucinations, balance problems when standing, restlessness, nervousness, sleepiness, weakness, depression, vertigo, weight gain, stomach pain, diarrhea, feeling sick, headache, sleep problems, skin swelling, skin rash, and skin itching are some Nootropil side effects that may occur. However, these are not all the side effects that can be caused by Nootropil. Call your doctor immediately if you develop side effects that are bothersome or persistent.

Drug interaction

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Thyroid extract or thyroxine, Anticoagulants such as warfarin or aceno-coumarol, Low dose aspirin, Any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Storage

Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use after the expiry date shown on the end panel of the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
